Although they held the induction ceremony on January 31, 2014, the inductees did not become official members of the society until April 11, with the payment of national dues. The administrative tasks that the members of the new Iota Pi chapter faced at Tufts University were both Augean and Procrustean. (Such is the case at an increasing number of host institutions.) The charter for a new chapter had been approved at the 2013 convention, about a week before the tragedy at the Boston Marathon. (Tufts is located in Medford, MA, just outside of Boston.) The first initiation was accordingly planned for the next academic year, but after the ceremony in January the number of forms and signatures and invoices and vendor applications delayed payment until April 11, 2104, the last possible date by constitution for the new chapter to complete the process.
Eta Sigma Phi is very happy to welcome an institution with such a strong and innovative tradition in classical studies, and we offer our praise and thanks to faculty and students for their dedication in completing the process for membership.
