IMG_4594Eta Sigma Phi was well represented at the 148th meeting of the Society for Classical Studies in Toronto, Ontario, January 5-8.
The society sponsored its seventh panel of undergraduate research “The Next Generation.” Prof. Antonios Augoustakis of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Chair of the Board of Trustees served as the respondent.  The members of the panel with the titles of their papers:

  • Joshua Blecher-Cohen, Harvard University, “Rehabilitating Legal Rule in Statesman and Laws”
  • Anne Begin, Hillsdale College, “Thucydides’ Use of Counterfactuals in the Pylos Narrative”
  • Joseph Slama, Truman State University, “Harry Potter and the Descent to the Underworld: Katabasis in the Final Installment of J.K. Rowling’s Septology,”

The national officers tended the society’s booth in the exhibit hall to publicize the mission and activities of the organization, and about 30 guests thronged the society’s annual reception.

There are, in fact, two Canadian chapters of Eta Sigma Phi, but neither are active.
